Tiger Woods enters Players Championship at Sawgrass

Woods will be looking for his second victory at TPC Sawgrass World number one Tiger Woods will compete at the prestigious Players Championship in early May in his second straight event on the PGA Tour. The 34-year-old American will make his first appearance since finishing fourth at the Masters at the Quail Hollow Championship from 29 April to 2 May. He will then go to Sawgrass in Florida for the Players event from 6-9 May. Woods made his comeback at Augusta after five months away in the wake of revelations about his private life. The 14-time major champion won the Players - known unofficially as the year's "fifth major" - in 2001, a year after finishing as runner-up to Hal Sutton. He has competed in 12 Players Championships and has had four top-10 finishes. "This is our event and it always attracts one of the best fields of the year," Woods said in a statement on his website. "It's a tournament everybody wants to win." Jay Monahan, vice president and executive director of thetournament, said: "We are thrilled to add Tiger Woods to the field. "We really appreciate the fact that he gave us advance notice so we can generate additional excitement here in the community. "This is a huge boost for what was already shaping up to be an incredible week for our fans on site and those watching around the world." Woods said after the final round at Augusta that he would take a further break, but soon announced he would return at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina. He will be hopeful of repeating his Quail Hollow victory of 2007 having finished fourth last year, two shots behind champion Sean O'Hair. In contrast to the tightly controlled conditions at Augusta, Quail Hollow will see Woods playing in an event where tickets are sold to the general public. Tournament director Kym Hougham said: "I think our crowds are very respectful and they always have been. The players have always told us that. If there is inappropriate behaviour, we'll act on it swiftly. "I'm sure that if Tiger didn't feel we could handle it he wouldn't be coming here." Woods has also confirmed he has submitted his entry for the US Open, the year's second major, set for 17-20 June at Pebble Beach. Woods won the 2000 US Open by 15 shots on the coastal Californian course to spark the beginning of his run of four straight major titles, known as the "Tiger Slam". "It's always been one of my favourite courses," said Woods. "I can't wait to go back." Woods has also announced he will defend his title at the AT&T National in Philadelphia from 1-4 July, an event he has hosted for the past three years at Washington's Congressional Country Club, which is preparing for the 2011 US Open. "I'm really looking forward to defending my title at the AT&T National," Woods said. "Philly is a great sports town, and I'm excited to play at Aronimink Golf Club." The American was stripped of his host role at the National by AT&T, which dropped an endorsement deal with Woods in the wake of the sex scandal in which more than a dozen women claimed affairs with the married father of two. The National comes two weeks before the Open Championship at St Andrews, a course upon which Woods won the Open in 2000 and 2005. However, he has yet to submit his entry for the Open. Masters champion Phil Mickelson has also confirmed his entry for Quail Hollow and Sawgrass. The Californian moved to number two in the world rankings following his third Masters victory.
